Baking in My Blood: Our Origin Story
Growing up in Toronto as part of a Caribbean family, baking has always felt like a legacy and a connection to my roots. My great-grandfather was a self-taught baker whose passion for baking was known throughout his community. His swan-shaped breads, especially popular around Easter, and his gizzada, a beloved West Indian coconut dessert, made his name unforgettable among neighbors and friends. He taught himself the art of baking, infusing his creations with culture, skill, and generosity. To this day, people from his community share memories of his treats with me—a legacy that brings me both pride and inspiration.
While I didn’t have the chance to learn directly from him, my great-grandfather’s spirit continues to influence my baking. I’ve seen the power of a single baked good to bring people together, which is why creating recipes that are inclusive and vegan is so important to me.
My journey to a plant-based lifestyle wasn’t instantaneous; it started at 15 when I decided to stop eating red meat, mainly as an exercise in discipline. Over time, I found that being mindful of what I ate became a lifestyle, and soon I committed to a fully vegan diet. As I transitioned, I noticed that my energy increased, and I no longer dealt with the frequent illnesses I used to experience. Eliminating dairy had an impact on my health, reminding me that food can truly transform our well-being.
Inspired by the traditions of my great-grandfather and the health journey I’ve been on, I’m dedicated to crafting delicious, wholesome, and nut-free treats for everyone. Every item I bake carries with it the love and legacy of family and a commitment to health.
Join me in creating sweet memories with each bite.
